How to prepare for your first medical spa or facial appointment.

Walking into a medical spa (medspa) or clinical facial appointment for the first time can feel a little intimidating, especially since the treatments are more clinical and results-driven than a traditional day spa.

To get the absolute best results from your treatment—and avoid accidental skin irritation—a little bit of preparation goes a long way.

1. One Week Before: Stop the Actives

The most important step happens a few days before you even walk through the door. Because medical facials and medspa treatments (like chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser therapy) intensely exfoliate or stimulate the skin, you need to pause anything that makes your skin sensitive.

  • Stop Retinoids / Retinol: Pause prescription tretinoin, retinol, or tazarotene at least 5 to 7 days before your appointment.

  • Pause Chemical Exfoliants: Stop using AHAs (like glycolic or lactic acid) and BHAs (like salicylic acid) 3 to 5 days prior.

  • Avoid Direct Sun: Do not get a sunburn. If you show up with sunburned or heavily tanned skin, most medspas will legally and safely have to reschedule you.

2. The Day of: Keep it Simple

On the day of your appointment, your goal is to make the process as seamless as possible for your practitioner.

  • Go Bare-Faced (If Possible): It is perfectly fine to arrive with a clean, freshly washed face. If you are coming straight from work, don't worry—they will cleanse your skin for you—but avoiding heavy waterproof makeup saves more time for the actual treatment.

  • Skip the Gym After: Plan your workout before your appointment, not after. Sweat, heat, and gym bacteria can severely irritate freshly treated skin, especially if you receive extractions or microneedling.

  • Bring Your Current Routine: If you can, take a quick photo of the skincare products you use daily. Your aesthetician will want to see exactly what you are putting on your face to tailor their advice.

3. What to Expect During the Appointment

1.The Consultation & Paperwork:10-15 mins.

You will fill out a thorough medical history intake form. Your provider will analyze your skin under a bright light, ask about your primary goals (e.g., clearing acne, fading dark spots, or anti-aging), and map out a safe treatment plan.

2.The Treatment:30-60 mins.

Depending on what you chose, this may involve professional-grade cleansing, custom exfoliation, manual pore extractions, or advanced device work. Always speak up if a sensation feels too hot, sharp, or uncomfortable.

3.Aftercare Briefing:5 mins.

Before you leave, your provider will give you specific "post-care" instructions. They will explain exactly what to apply to your skin over the next 48 hours to lock in results and protect the skin barrier.

The Golden Rule of Post-Care: Keep a gentle cleanser, a basic moisturizer, and a high-SPF sunscreen ready at home. For the first 48 hours after a medical facial, your skin's protective barrier is temporarily vulnerable, making strict sun protection non-negotiable.
